Mike Shore found this article in the Cincinnati Enquirer dated
August 23, 1895. Mr. & Mrs. Frederick Fenker were
the maternal grandparents of my Mom, Mildred ‘Sis’ Shore Buening.
They had two more children (one was Aunt Helen) so I assume they did not get divorced.
The domestic troubles of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Fenker, of Pleasant Ridge, Hamilton County,
resulted in litigation in the Courts yesterday in two directions. The Fenkers run a dairy, and the causes of all the
‘unpleasantness’ was a good-looking driver, whom the husband
accused of being too friendly with his wife. The couple had frequent quarrels
about him, and last Sunday he was discharged. That night there was another
quarrel, and Mrs. Fenker, after putting the children
to bed, donned her best attire and came to the city. This was done just to give
her husband a scare. Mr. Fenker immediately took the
two children, Henry aged 3 years, and Elsie, aged 5 months, to the residence of
his brother-in-law and sister, Conrad and Louise Kellerman,
where they have since remained. When Mrs. Fenker
returned home and wanted the children back, but Frederick was in a contrary mood. Then Mrs. Fenker, through her attorney, John J. Acomb,
sought possession of the children through a writ of habeas corpus. Judge Wright setting the case for to-morrow at 10 o’clock.
And while she was about it Mrs. Fenker also filed a
suit for alimony. Their marriage took place February 24, 1886 and she charges
extreme cruelty on his part. She says that on August 15 he unjustly accused her
of infidelity and ordered her to leave the house. In spite of her entreaties,
he would not return their children. She claims he had spirited them away. She
alleges that he threatens to dispose of the dairy, including 27 cows, five horses
and three wagons, and also of the household goods, and hence a temporary
injunction was asked for, which was allowed by Judge Wright. The tender
age—3 months—of the baby Elsie, was the main cause for the habeas
corpus suit, as the mother fears that she may die if longer deprived of her
care.
